This August, the Originals Theater Company in Portland will stage an insightful production of the play “A Picasso” by acclaimed dramatist Jeffry Hatcher. This clever two-character drama imagines an encounter between Pablo Picasso and a fictional art collector negotiating to purchase one of his paintings.
Presented at the Originals’ intimate black box theater, “A Picasso” examines the relationship between art and commerce through the bargaining and bantering of Picasso and his shrewd patron, Ms. White. Witty dialogue explores questions of art ownership and the subjectivity of value.
“We’re excited to bring this smart, engaging play to life on our small stage,” said director Mathew Chase. “Audiences are sure to find it an intriguing perspective on the art world.”
“A Picasso” runs from August 4-21, with performances Thursday through Saturday at 7pm and Sunday matinees at 2pm. The stripped-down production and compact theater provide an ideal setting for this battle of wits exploring art’s meaning and worth.
