This August, the ISLE Theater Company based in Belfast, Maine will debut an exciting new play titled WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE. Written by local playwright Mariah Smith, this timely drama tackles the effects of climate change and rising sea levels on a coastal Maine town.
Performed at the ISLE Theater, WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE centers on a fierce debate within a fictional community facing regular flooding from storm surges and tides. While some residents refuse to leave their beloved town, others argue for a managed retreat to higher ground.
“This play grapples with the difficult choices coastal communities will increasingly face,” said director Mathew Chase. “It presents a compelling human drama against the backdrop of a global crisis.”
Playwright Mariah Smith drew inspiration from real Maine towns struggling with increased flooding and erosion. As a Belfast native, Smith feels passionate about bringing this relevant issue to the stage.
WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE runs from August 11-21, with performances at 7pm Thursday through Saturday plus 2pm Sunday matinees. Tickets and details available at www.isletheater.org.
