Foremothers Project Spotlights Work of Pioneering Women Artists at Freeport’s Meetinghouse Arts

This spring, the Meetinghouse Arts gallery in Freeport, Maine, presents “Foremothers,” an inspiring exhibit celebrating the often overlooked contributions of women to the development of modern art. By spotlighting pioneering female painters, sculptors, and photographers from the early 20th century, this timely show aims to provide greater visibility for those who shaped the course of creativity despite facing gender-based obstacles.

Curated by art historian JuliaLang, “Foremothers” features over 40 works by trailblazers such as Gertrude Käsebier, Helen Torr, and Emmi Whitehorse. Spanning mediums from painting and sculpture to mixed media collage, their pieces demonstrate innovation in form and theme that challenged conventions of their day. Many overcame barriers within a male-dominated art world to make their bold creative mark and open doors for the women artists who followed them.

Alongside the exhibit, Meetinghouse Arts will host a series of talks delving into the featured artists’ fascinating lives and surveying their influence. By profiling these determined pioneers who defied norms and expectations, Meetinghouse Arts hopes to provide inspiration for contemporary artists and demonstrate the empowering legacy of creativity.

“Foremothers” runs from May 5th through June 12th, shining light on revolutionary women in art history while also celebrating the female creative spirit.
