This weekend, the critically acclaimed BANDLOOP dance company from Oakland, California will be visiting Biddeford to give a special performance. On Saturday, August 6th at 8pm, BANDLOOP will take the stage at the historic City Theater in downtown Biddeford.
Founded in 2016, BANDLOOP is led by choreographer and artistic director Jenny Gerena. The company is known for its unique blend of contemporary dance and athletic choreography. Their performances incorporate elements of partnering, floorwork, and gestural movement.
“We’re thrilled to bring BANDLOOP’s inspiring brand of movement to Maine,” said Biddeford City Theater director Mathew Chase. “Their west coast energy will invigorate our local dance community.”
Saturday’s show will feature selections from BANDLOOP’s repertoire. Highlights include Gerena’s athletic piece “Ricochet,” which interprets the energy of a pinball machine through motion. The program will also include excerpts from the ensemble work “Spin Cycle,” which plays with balance and momentum between dancers.
BANDLOOP is concluding their rural New England tour with this engagement in Biddeford. The company has appreciated connecting with new audiences. As Gerena stated, “Every community we visit gives fresh perspective to our choreography.”
With affordable general admission tickets, Saturday’s performance provides a rare opportunity to experience contemporary west coast dance without leaving Maine. The City Theater expects a full house for this exciting cultural event.
